A bend restrictor (BR) is used where the loads on a cable (umbilical/flow line) are static rather than dynamic (a bend stiffener is more suited for this latter).
Our bend restrictors comprise a number of interlocking elements that, when subjected to an external load, articulate and lock together to form a smooth curved radius. This locking radius is designed to be equal to, or greater than, the cable’s minimum bend radius.
Our split design is easy to install both onshore and offshore. It also allows bend restrictor installation after cable termination. Being almost neutrally buoyant in water, it eliminates any self-weight load on the cable.
What is Bend Restrictors (BR)?
Bend restrictors are used to protect cables and flexible pipelines from cracking and buckling when over-bending where static loads are generated. They form the interface between flexible and fixed structures and they are useful both during installation and operation.
A bend restrictor (BR), also called a vertebrae bend restrictor (VBR), has been developed and designed to protect, for example, an underwater pipeline at an offshore facility. The bend restrictor construction protects the cable from over-bending when exposed to high loads. The BR material is polyurethane, which is known for its strong, durable and elastic properties: another guarantee that the protection will work.
Vertebrae bend restrictor
A bend restrictor is constructed like a spine with vertebrae. It has a certain flexibility that is determined by the mobility of each individual vertebra. The mobility of each vertebra locks at a certain radius limit and is called the locking bend radius (LBR). They are designed to mechanically prevent bending beyond the permitted minimum bend radius (MBR).
Bend Restrictors are manufactured in a split design that enables easy installation directly onboard, when installing from cable launching ships.
